2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022

Description

Featuring Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubling, WDDO-022 on the 2005-P Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel — Ocean in View shows spread on WE and RUS of TRUST. Tilted Hub doubling occurs when the hub is canted slightly during the hubbing process, producing a distinctive spread pattern that varies based on distance and direction from the tilt axis. A die scratch below the U of TRUST marks the obverse, while the reverse shows die breaks below IBU of PLURIBUS and a die gouge below the L of PLURIBUS. This variety was struck with the special satin finish used exclusively for coins in 2005-2010 Uncirculated Mint Sets — a matte-like surface treatment distinct from both standard business strikes and proof finishes. The "Ocean in View" reverse is part of the 2005 Westward Journey program, depicting the Pacific Ocean vista that greeted Lewis and Clark upon reaching the coast. Satin Finish coins have a lower mintage than standard circulation strikes, and doubled dies on these special-finish issues are proportionally scarcer.
