Attributed by Edward Fletcher, Jr. and cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID 2005 P WDDO-021 Satin Finish Ocean in View, this Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverse exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling with very close spread on IN GOD WE TRUST. Class VIII doubling results from the hub tilting during the impression process, creating a rocking displacement that concentrates spread in specific areas of the die face. The very close classification indicates the secondary image sits extremely near the primary, requiring careful magnification to resolve. The reverse die paired with this obverse is itself a doubled die, listed as 2005 P OIV 5c WDDR-045 — making this another DDO/DDR die marriage within the 2005 Westward Journey series. The "Ocean in View" designation identifies this as the second 2005 reverse, depicting the Pacific coastline as seen by the Lewis and Clark expedition, with the inscription "Ocean in view! O! The Joy!" based on William Clark's journal entry. The Satin Finish indicates this variety comes from the special finish coins included in 2005 Mint Sets, which feature a distinctive matte-like surface produced by burnished dies rather than the standard business strike or proof finish. Twenty-one doubled die obverses documented for the 2005-P Satin Finish Ocean in View nickel is a remarkable count, reflecting the intensive examination these popular commemorative coins have received. The Westward Journey series' two-year run (2004-2005) with its multiple reverse designs generated widespread collector interest that drove thorough die variety research across all finish types.
