2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Displaying Class VIII tilted hub doubling — an extremely close spread visible on GOD and TRUST with slight doubling on the date — this fourteenth doubled die obverse for the 2005 Satin Finish Ocean in View Jefferson Nickel represents one of the scarcer Westward Journey series varieties. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during the hubbing process, producing a rotational spread that differs from the lateral or vertical shifts seen in other doubling classes. The Westward Journey series (2004-2005) featured special reverse designs commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition, and this particular variety appears on the "Ocean in View" design depicting the Pacific coastline. Attributed by Kenneth Russell under Wexler Variety ID 2005 P WDDO-014 Satin Finish, the Satin Finish designation indicates this variety is found on coins produced for annual uncirculated mint sets, which used a specialized burnishing process on the planchets before striking. Die markers include a short die gouge above Jefferson's ear on the obverse and a die dot at the left side of the Y of JOY on the reverse, providing secondary diagnostics for definitive attribution beyond the doubling itself.
