2001D-1DEO-004T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Found by Ryan Magers, this 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits light trail lines from the top corners of IBER in LIBERTY, very similar to the related variety 1DEO-003T. Trail die varieties occur when a die receives incomplete or offset hubbing that leaves faint linear traces from design elements, distinct from the broader displacement seen in doubled dies. The offset direction of 340 degrees places the trail lines nearly due north-northwest from the primary letter positions. Classified as Stage B at Early MDS, the die had progressed just past the earliest production phase. Obverse die markers include several gouges on Lincoln's shoulder and a die gouge between the two zeros in the date. On the reverse, the die had reached MDS with a small crack developing above the left planter on the column, charting the beginning of structural deterioration. The similarity to 1DEO-003T suggests these two dies may have been prepared under comparable conditions, possibly hubbed during the same session or from the same working hub, resulting in trail line patterns that parallel each other in placement though originating from independent die preparation events.
