Description

The 2000 (D) South Carolina State Quarter, struck at the Denver Mint, is part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 collection. The U.S. Mint produced 566.2 million examples, making this ranked 4th of 10 mint variants by mintage, with 9% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse features the state's iconic palmetto tree, the Carolina wren (state bird), and yellow jessamine (state flower). The palmetto represents the famous palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island that repelled a British naval attack in 1776. Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Virginia. The program drove an estimated 147 million Americans to collect quarters. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906.
