Description

Cataloged as TDC-10c-1999-01 by MadDieClashes, this 1999-P Roosevelt Dime presents a typical die clash that approaches the boundary of atypical classification. The clash marks were left unabraded, meaning the Mint did not polish the die surfaces to remove the transferred design elements after the unobstructed contact between obverse and reverse dies. On the obverse, parts of the olive branches appear near and on Roosevelt's face, along with fragments of the E and P from E PLURIBUS UNUM, a fragment of the O from ONE, and portions of the torch and oak leaves from the reverse design. The reverse displays an outline of the portrait, the D from GOD, and a fragment of the mintmark. A die crack on the cheek serves as a useful die marker for attribution. Die clashes occur when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, and the resulting impressed designs transfer as incuse marks, creating ghost images of opposite-side elements.
