Description

Bearing the Wexler designation 1999-P 10¢ WDDR-001, this Philadelphia Roosevelt dime is the sole cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1999 issue — a year of particular numismatic significance because it marked the beginning of the State Quarters program, which diverted much of the Mint's production attention and collector focus toward the quarter denomination. The 1999-P dime nevertheless saw substantial mintage as the Mint maintained commercial supply of all circulating denominations, and within that output at least one reverse die received a misaligned hubbing that produced detectable doubling. John Sinnock's reverse design — the torch flanked by olive and oak branches — was entering its fifty-third year of continuous use in 1999, and the design's longevity meant that die preparation procedures were thoroughly standardized, making genuine hub doubling anomalies stand out against the baseline of normal production quality. No cross-references to CONECA, Cherrypickers, or other services have been documented for this variety, and no die markers beyond the doubled elements have been reported. The fact that only one DDR has been cataloged for the 1999-P dime could reflect either a genuinely low incidence of hubbing anomalies that year or limited search attention, as many variety specialists redirected their efforts toward the new State Quarter designs that generated enormous public and collector excitement throughout 1999. Examination of reverse lettering and torch details under magnification remains the standard approach for confirming this variety.
