1995-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

While the 1995 Philadelphia DDO-001 cent became one of the most famous doubled dies in American numismatics, the Denver Mint produced its own roster of doubled die obverse varieties — including WDDO-006, a Class V counter-clockwise spread pivoting from approximately the 12 o'clock position. The doubling manifests on LIBERTY, the lower bust, the mint mark, the date, and the lower beard details, with the rotational nature of Class V doubling creating a fan-like spread that increases in magnitude farther from the pivot point. Two obverse die cracks serve as key attribution markers: one running north to south behind Lincoln's ear, and another extending from the top center of the forehead in a north-northwest direction through the hair. No reverse die markers were noted by the Wexler Team, who assigned this the designation 1995-D 1¢ WDDO-006. Denver struck over 6.4 billion cents in 1995, making this a high-mintage issue where dedicated searching through rolls and bags can yield discoveries. The copper-plated zinc composition used since 1982 continued to define the planchet, and the Lincoln Memorial reverse designed by Frank Gasparro remained in service as it had since 1959.
