1995-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1995D-1DO-005, the 1995-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-004 shows a very close spread to the north on the LIBE of LIBERTY, the 5 in the date, and the bottom of the mintmark. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. On the reverse, a short die scratch runs north-northwest from the upper left side of the first Memorial column, and a die scratch extends northeast from the upper center of the diagonal bar of the N in CENT to the top right side of the N. The northward spread direction, while close, affects enough of the LIBERTY inscription to be detectable under magnification, particularly on the wider strokes of the L, B, and E. The mintmark base doubling is an especially useful diagnostic, as collectors can quickly check that area on 1995-D cents during roll searching. The reverse die scratches near the first column and in the N of CENT provide secondary confirmation once the obverse doubling has been tentatively identified.
