Description

Fourth documented reverse cud for the 1990 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime, this variety preserves a major die break at the rim where a piece of the reverse die fractured and separated completely. When the die fragment broke away, it left a cavity that filled with metal during each subsequent strike, producing a raised featureless mass at the edge of every coin struck from that die. Four cuds from a single date and mint indicate either that multiple reverse dies developed rim breaks during the 1990-P production run, or that a single die with a progressive break was documented at different stages. The "04R" designation specifies this as the fourth cud on the reverse face. Philadelphia struck enormous quantities of Roosevelt Dimes in 1990, with production running across many die pairs to maintain the continuous supply of circulating coinage needed for commerce. The Roosevelt Dime, first struck in 1946 to honor Franklin D. Roosevelt following his death in 1945, had been produced in copper-nickel clad composition since 1965. By 1990, the clad dime had been produced for twenty-five years, and the Mint had extensive experience with the metallurgical properties of the clad planchets.
