Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins and cross-referenced as RDC-90P-01R in the Roosevelt Dime Cud reference system (entry dated October 1, 2013), this 1990-P Roosevelt Dime carries a reverse rim cud — the "R" suffix in the designation confirming the break occurred on the reverse die rather than the obverse. Rim cuds form when a section of the working die at or near the edge fractures and separates, leaving a void in the die cavity. When the broken die continues to strike planchets (either before the break is detected or during the brief production interval before the die is pulled from service), the void fills with metal that flows into the space, creating a raised, featureless blob at the rim of the struck coin. On the Roosevelt Dime's compact 17.9 mm diameter, even a small cud occupies a proportionally significant portion of the coin's circumference, making dime cuds among the most visually striking relative to the coin's size. The 1990-P Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (2.27 grams) as part of standard circulation production. John R.
