1989 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
ErrorDescription
Oriented as a spread towards rim on the date and TRUST, WDDO-002 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WDDO-002) shows the secondary hub impression displaced outward from center — the opposite direction from the towards-center spread seen on WDDO-001. This outward displacement produces a doubling effect where the secondary design elements appear slightly outside their primary counterparts, creating the impression of expanded or widened strokes on the affected date numerals and TRUST letters. The obverse carries a die gouge positioned northwest of the numeral 1 in the date, while die clash remnants appear in two locations: to the left of Lincoln's neck and in the seventh bay of the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse. Numerous east/west die scratches traverse the obverse surface, adding to the die's distinctive fingerprint. The die clash remnants in two separate locations — neck area and Memorial bay — indicate at least one instance where obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, leaving ghost impressions of each die's design on the opposing die face. No additional cross-references are currently known. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
