Description

Cataloged as CU-1C-1989-01 and cross-referenced as LC-ND-31 in the Cud Book and FDC-1c-1989-01 in the floating die clash registry, this cud occupies a unique position in the 1989 Lincoln cent error census: it shares the same obverse die as the floating die clash enriched under the FDC-1c-1989-01 designation. This die relationship means the obverse die first experienced a floating die clash — where the die shifted laterally during a strike, transferring a partial offset impression — and subsequently developed a rim fracture that produced the cud. The progression from clash to cud on a single die documents the mechanical degradation of die steel under the repeated stresses of high-speed production. Cuds form when a section of the die rim fractures and breaks away, leaving a void in the die face that fills with metal during striking, creating a raised featureless blob at the edge of the coin. The LC-ND-31 cross-reference uses the Cud Book's Lincoln Cent numbering system, where ND indicates the catalog number was assigned without a specific date-position correlation. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a copper-plated zinc planchet (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams at 19mm diameter.
