1989D-1DER-007 Trail Die Reverse

Description

Carrying no directional suffix — neither WS nor T — the 1989D-1DER-007 trail die reverse stands apart in the 1989-D trail die catalog as a variety whose hubbing anomaly type has not been further classified into one of the standard subcategories. This absence of a suffix may indicate the trail features do not fit neatly into the tilted or wide-spread patterns, or that further examination is needed to assign the appropriate designation. Discovered by Bob Piazza, this variety is documented at Stage B in mid-die state (MDS). The obverse carries a die gouge positioned next to the rim, to the right of the last T in TRUST — a rim-adjacent marker that should remain identifiable even on specimens with moderate wear, as rim-area features tend to survive longer than field details. The mid-die state classification places this variety at the midpoint of its production life, where the trail features retain reasonable definition while the die has developed enough character to show clear supplementary markers. Bob Piazza's discovery contribution adds to the body of trail die documentation for the 1989-D date. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
