1989-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-002 and listed under Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WDDO-001, this Denver Mint doubled die obverse shows a spread towards the center on the date, with a distinctive notch visible on the bottom left of the digit 1. The Wexler description provides an unusually detailed set of die markers for attribution: on the obverse, a die scratch runs north from the top right of the Y in LIBERTY, light parallel die scratches run from NNW to SSE to the left of the date, and a small die gouge appears near the bottom right point of Lincoln's bust. On the reverse, a short diagonal die gouge can be found on the roof above the seventh Memorial bay. These multiple, precisely located markers create a reliable attribution fingerprint that distinguishes WDDO-001 from other 1989-D doubled die obverses. The Crawford cross-reference as CDDO-002 indicates that this same variety has been independently documented in the Crawford attribution system, providing dual verification. Denver struck over 5.3 billion cents in 1989, and the 1989-D issue remains one of the last dates where both hub doubling and hand-punched mintmark varieties could co-occur on the same die. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
