1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-027

Description

Documented across two die stages with evolving marker profiles on both surfaces, WRPM-027 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-027) is a D/D South repunched mintmark whose stage progression captures the dynamic life of a working die. The Stage A obverse shows a die gouge under the T in TRUST, a gouge above the RT in LIBERTY, and a strong gouge at the rim at the 6 o'clock position — a particularly bold marker whose rim-level location makes it visible even under moderate wear. By Stage B, the obverse markers have weakened but a new gouge has developed southeast of the bow tie, reflecting ongoing die deterioration. The reverse tells a parallel story of die evolution: Stage A carries a die scratch running from the S in PLURIBUS to the F in OF, while Stage B introduces a die crack extending from CENT to the Memorial base — a structural failure in the die steel that signals advancing fatigue. The transition from surface scratches in Stage A to a developing die crack in Stage B illustrates the progressive mechanical stress that ultimately ends a die's service life. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. Reverse: Stage A: Die scratch running north from S in PLURIBUS to F in OF. Die crack runs from just west of E in CENT up to the memorial base.
