Description

Tracked across two die stages with a reverse die replacement between them, WRPM-025 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-025) is a D/D South repunched mintmark whose production history documents a significant die shop event. Stage A pairs the original obverse and reverse dies, while Stage B retains the same obverse die but introduces a new reverse die — a die swap that confirms the original reverse reached the end of its service life while the obverse remained viable. The published die marker notes for this variety include a reference to a "did gouge" — an apparent typographical error for "die gouge" that is preserved here as it appears in the Wexler record. Stage B's replacement reverse die carries its own developing diagnostics, including a die chip and a die crack running from the O to the N in ONE, indicating the new reverse was also accumulating wear during its service alongside the continuing obverse. The southward displacement of the secondary mintmark places the corrective punch directly below the initial impression, a common orientation among 1989-D RPMs. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. D/D South Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: A faint die scratch runs SSE from the tail of the 1 in the date. A light die gouge shows to the northeast of the upper eyelid. Heavy die gouges connected to a N-S die scratch show to the right of the E in WE. A small die gouge (dot) shows on the northeast edge of the B in VDB. A did gouge shows on the shoulder, well north of the B in VDB. Stage B: SSE die scratch from 1 in date extremely faint. A pair of strong die gouges show to the east of the lower E in ONE. A die gouge shows in the field north of the F in FG.
