1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-015
Error
Description
Replacing the original WRPM-015 designation — which was found to be an earlier die state of another variety — this D/D South repunched mintmark (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-015) exhibits extensive die cracking on both surfaces that points to a die approaching the end of its service life. The obverse shows faint die cracks at the rim below VDB, though these may represent planchet damage rather than die deterioration, along with a die gouge on the fold of the coat. The reverse is more dramatically affected: die cracks appear in the field above the left side of the Memorial roof, a curved die crack runs through the upper left part of the roof, and die gouges sit under the second T and second S in STATES and under I in UNITED. Strong die deterioration is visible at the rim throughout the reverse, with light die cracks at the right side of columns 9, 10, and 11, and a crack under column 3 that may also be planchet damage. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-020, the extensive cracking suggests this die was near terminal failure when producing the documented specimens. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
