1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014

Description

Cataloged across two die stages, WRPM-014 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-014) is a D/D South repunched mintmark with subtle but diagnostic die markers concentrated around the date area. The Stage A obverse features a very short northwest/southeast die scratch in the field above the right side of the 8 in the date, a short die scratch on the upper right side of the 8, and a north-northeast/south-southwest die scratch inside the 9 of the date. By Stage B, the field scratch has been abraded away while the other Stage A scratches persist in weakened form. The Stage A reverse shows no visible markers, while Stage B reveals a light depression at the right eave of the Lincoln Memorial. The gradual erasure of die markers between stages — particularly the loss of the field scratch to die polishing or abrasion — is a common phenomenon in die maintenance that complicates attribution for collectors who may not know which stage their specimen represents. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known, making the Wexler listing the sole attribution source. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
