Description

A replacement variety that now occupies the WRPM-013 catalog position after the original was found to be a duplicate of WRPM-003, this D/D South repunched mintmark (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-013) features an extensive array of obverse die markers. The obverse shows die gouges above T in LIBERTY, above the jacket fold directly above V in VDB, under the left side of N in IN, near the rim above IN GOD WE, in the vest at the level of the base of 9, in the field at the level of Lincoln's eye, and right of the upper T in TRUST. The reverse carries gouges left of U in UNITED and right of lower D in UNITED. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-019, this variety's reclassification history demonstrates the challenges of RPM cataloging: two varieties may appear distinct on initial examination but prove identical upon closer comparison of die markers, requiring the duplicate to be replaced with a genuine new variety to maintain the catalog's integrity. The density of obverse die markers — seven distinct gouges distributed across the bust, legend, and field — gives collectors abundant reference points for attribution. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
