1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-011

Description

Now a replacement listing after the original WRPM-011 was found to be split plating around the mintmark rather than a genuine repunching, the current WRPM-011 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-011) is a D/D South variety with extensive die markers on both surfaces. The obverse shows die gouges at the rim left of the bust, above and right of the second T in TRUST, at the 3:00 rim position, directly south from I in IN, and in the vest at the level of the bottom of the mintmark. The reverse presents heavy die scratches running northwest through E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES, a gouge right of A in STATES, criss-crossing die scratches through TED in UNITED, a gouge in memorial bay 2, northeast die scratches in bays 1 through 3, a scratch running northwest from under C in CENT, and gouges inside and under memorial bay 9. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-022, the reclassification from split plating to genuine RPM underscores the importance of accurate diagnosis — split plating on copper-plated zinc cents can mimic repunching by creating apparent doubling around design elements. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
