1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-010

Description

A D/D Tilted repunched mintmark documented across two die stages, WRPM-010 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-010) carries cross-references as CONECA RPM #10 and Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-008. The Stage A obverse features a series of southeast-oriented die scratches running from the lower area of the 19 in the date down through the lower vest, the left side, and upper left of the mintmark — a continuous scratch pattern that provides an unusually strong diagnostic for this die state. By Stage B, these scratches have worn away, replaced by prominent die deterioration lines above 89 in the date. The Stage A reverse showed none noted, as the examined coin displayed surface bubbles that limited evaluation. Stage B reveals a small die gouge right of the upper serif of the first S in STATES. The dramatic transformation from Stage A to Stage B — where the primary scratch pattern is entirely replaced by different deterioration markers — illustrates how a die's diagnostic profile can change fundamentally across its service life, requiring collectors to reference the correct stage description for their specimen. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
