1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009

Description

Bearing cross-references as CONECA RPM #5 and Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-005, WRPM-009 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-009) features a particularly rich set of directional die scratches distributed across both surfaces. The obverse shows die scratches running roughly north from the left of the date, a scratch running east-southeast from the hairline, scratches running south-southeast from BE in LIBERTY, and another scratch running north from E in LIBERTY — a pattern of multi-directional scratches that suggests the die surface sustained contact with foreign material from several angles during its service life. The reverse carries a small die gouge (dot) left of the upper N in ONE, die scratches running through the central CEN in CENT, and a die gouge below the left side of R in LIBERTY and the left side of C in AMERICA. The abundance of directional die scratches on the obverse provides collectors with multiple reference points for confident attribution, as the specific angles and positions of these scratches are unique to this working die. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
