1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #9 and Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-009, the 1989-D WRPM-002 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-002) is a D/D South repunched mintmark with the secondary impression displaced directly below the primary punch. The obverse carries a light die scratch running east from Lincoln's lower lip, while the reverse presents a constellation of distinctive markers: vertical die scratches in column bays 2 through 5, light east-to-west die scratches through the upper and middle NT in CENT, a die gouge near the rim right of G in the designer's initials FG, and criss-crossing die scratches above ONE. The CONECA RPM #9 designation indicates this was the ninth variety formally cataloged by the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America for the 1989-D date, placing it among the later discoveries in the initial RPM census. The reverse die's rich marker profile — particularly the vertical scratches spanning four memorial bays — provides collectors with strong diagnostic reference points for confident attribution even on specimens showing moderate circulation wear. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
