1989-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Rounding out the VarietyVista RPM catalog for 1989-D at ten documented varieties, RPM-010 displays a D/D Tilted orientation and carries the high-numbered reference codes UVC-3121 and DMR-011. The UVC-3121 designation — far removed from the sequential 1029-1037 range of RPMs 001 through 009 — indicates this variety was added to the VarietyVista master catalog at a later date, after the initial batch of 1989-D RPMs had already been numbered. Three die stages are documented: Stage A with obverse and reverse at early die state, Stage B with both at mid-die state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The tilted orientation means the secondary mintmark impression is rotated relative to the primary, combining elements of both positional and angular misalignment. Ten VarietyVista RPMs for a single date-mintmark combination reflects the intensive examination that 1989-D cents received from variety specialists racing to catalog varieties from what they recognized as one of the last vintages to carry hand-punched mintmarks. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
