1989-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-006
Error
Description
Among the more unusual orientations in the 1989-D RPM census, RPM-006 exhibits a D/D Rotated CCW (counterclockwise) displacement — the secondary mintmark impression is rotated relative to the primary rather than simply shifted in a cardinal direction. Assigned VarietyVista reference codes UVC-1034 and DMR-007, this variety is documented across three die stages: Stage A with obverse and reverse at early-mid die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). Rotational misalignment between successive mintmark punches indicates that the engraver's second strike not only landed in a different position but at a different angle — a more complex deviation from the intended placement than a simple directional offset. This type of rotational RPM is less commonly encountered than cardinal-direction varieties like D/D West or D/D South, making RPM-006 a distinctive entry in the 1989-D lineup. As products of the penultimate year of hand-punched mintmarks at the Denver Mint, rotational RPMs like this one document the full range of human variability inherent in the manual die preparation process. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
