1989-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
With four documented die stages — the most extensive stage progression among the VarietyVista-cataloged 1989-D RPMs — RPM-004 is a D/D West repunched mintmark assigned reference codes UVC-1032 and DMR-005. Stage A features a small die gouge southeast of the last T in TRUST with both obverse and reverse at early die state. Stage B shows both sides progressing to early-mid die state. By Stage C, the obverse has reached mid-die state and a new diagnostic marker emerges: a small die gouge under the N in ONE on the reverse, also at mid-die state. Stage D at late die state remains unconfirmed. The mintmark on RPM-004 sits lower than on RPM-003, providing a quick diagnostic to differentiate these two D/D West varieties from the same date. The four-stage documentation traces the die's complete production life from fresh service through advanced wear, capturing how both the repunching evidence and supplementary die markers evolve across millions of striking cycles. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
