1987-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-012
Error
Description
Distinguished by a clockwise-rotated secondary D impression (D/D Rotated CW), RPM-012 on the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent is cataloged as UVC-1119 and DMR-013. The clockwise rotation means the initial mint mark punch was twisted slightly before the corrective second punch was applied in the proper orientation, leaving a rotationally displaced ghost image beneath the final D. Rotated RPMs differ mechanically from translationally displaced varieties: rather than the punch landing north, south, east, or west of the target, the punch contacted the die at the correct location but at an incorrect angular orientation. This creates a distinctive doubling pattern where the secondary impression curves around the primary mark rather than appearing as a shifted shadow in a single direction. RPM-012 progresses through three die stages — Stage A at early die state, Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C at late die state — providing collectors with reference points across the die's full service life. The UVC-1119 identifier diverges from the sequential 1013-1023 range assigned to RPMs 001 through 011, indicating RPM-012 was cataloged later within the VarietyVista system, likely after the initial census was already established. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1987-D mintage of 4,007,632,740 cents.
