1987-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Showing the D displaced to the southwest (D/D Southwest), RPM-005 on the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent is cataloged as UVC-1017 and DMR-006, with a three-stage progression that concludes in an extensively documented late die state. Stage A captures the early die state, Stage B the mid-die state, and Stage C describes the obverse at late die state accompanied by die cracks on columns number 10 and number 11 of the Lincoln Memorial reverse, plus a die crack on the E of ONE. The late die state reverse cracking documented in Stage C reveals that this die pair was pushed deep into its production life before retirement, accumulating significant fatigue damage across the reverse design. The columned facade of the Memorial provides a clear canvas for die crack tracking, since cracks that intersect the regular vertical geometry of the columns are readily apparent. Die cracks on columns 10 and 11, positioned toward the right side of the building, combined with the crack on E in ONE, map out a pattern of deterioration concentrated in the right portion of the reverse die. Southwestern displacement of the D means the initial punch was placed slightly northeast of its intended position, requiring a corrective punch that shifted the final mark toward the southwest. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1987-D mintage of 4,007,632,740 cents.
