1987-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001
Error
Description
The leading repunched mint mark for the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-001 shows the D punched over a D displaced to the west (D/D West), creating a secondary impression visible as a shadow or extra thickness on the western side of the primary mint mark. Cataloged as UVC-1013 and DMR-002, this variety is documented across three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The unconfirmed early and late stage designations indicate that specimens from those extremes of the die's service life have been observed but not yet verified with sufficient die marker evidence for definitive confirmation. The confirmed mid-die state in Stage B provides the most reliable attribution window. Repunched mint marks on 1987-D Lincoln cents document some of the final years when the Denver Mint applied individual D punches to working dies by hand — a process where corrections to initially misaligned punches created the doubled mint mark impressions that RPM collectors pursue. Thirteen RPM varieties have been cataloged for the 1987-D date, reflecting the large die population needed to produce 4,007,632,740 cents that year. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
