1986 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Showing strong spread on the top of Lincoln's head and on IN GOD WE TRUST, DDO-002 on the 1986 Lincoln Memorial cent from Philadelphia concentrates its doubling in the upper obverse design. The strong classification places this variety at the higher end of the visibility spectrum — doubling on Lincoln's head and the motto should be discernible without extreme magnification. Cataloged with identifiers UVC-2395 and DMR-003, DDO-002 complements DDO-001 as the second of two known doubled die obverses for 1986 Philadelphia. Where DDO-001 shows medium spread on the date and motto with light spread on LIBERTY, DDO-002 directs its strongest doubling to the portrait and motto — a different hub displacement geometry. The hair detail at the top of Lincoln's head serves as the primary diagnostic zone. Philadelphia's 1986 mintage of 4,491,395,493 cents consumed thousands of dies, yet only two confirmed DDOs have been cataloged. Struck at Philadelphia (no mint mark) on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
