SKH-1c-1986-08 Spiked Head
Error
Description
With Philadelphia consuming thousands of working dies to produce over 4.49 billion cents in 1986, the statistical landscape for die failures was vast, and SKH-1c-1986-08 represents the eighth spiked head variety to emerge from that production run. Die fatigue at the portrait crown follows a probabilistic model: given a population of several thousand dies, each subjected to millions of high-pressure strikes, a predictable fraction will develop cracks at the stress concentration formed by Lincoln's head — the deepest cavity in the die face. The resulting spiked heads vary in prominence from faint hairlines barely discernible under a loupe to bold spikes visible to the unaided eye. Attribution of SKH-08 requires comparing the crack's orientation and geometry against the other fourteen documented varieties for this date, since no two dies crack along identical paths. Die steel is a polycrystalline material whose grain boundaries, inclusion distributions, and residual stresses from heat treatment create a unique microstructure in each die blank. These microscopic variations determine the exact trajectory of crack propagation, ensuring that every spiked head carries a one-of-a-kind profile even when the macro-level failure location — the portrait crown — is shared. Struck at Philadelphia (no mint mark) on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
