1986 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Exhibiting medium spread on the date and IN GOD WE TRUST motto with light spread on LIBERTY, DDO-001 on the 1986 Lincoln Memorial cent from Philadelphia presents a doubled die with two distinct intensity zones. The medium-strength doubling on the date and motto provides the primary diagnostic — collectors should observe separation or shadowing under 5x to 10x magnification. The lighter spread on LIBERTY reflects how hub doubling intensity varies across the die face depending on misalignment geometry during hubbing. Cataloged with die marker identifiers UVC-2394 and DMR-002, the cataloger has expressed a desire to see a specimen for new color digital photographs and die state information, suggesting current documentation predates modern imaging standards. Philadelphia struck 4,491,395,493 Lincoln cents in 1986 on copper-plated zinc planchets — an enormous run from which doubled die varieties represent extremely scarce anomalies. Struck at Philadelphia (no mint mark) on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
