Description

Discovered by Bob Piazza of Florida, the 1985D-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse documents faint drag marks left during the hubbing process on a 1985 Denver Mint Lincoln cent die. Trail dies occur when design elements leave subtle linear traces as the hub and die separate or during slight lateral movement between impressions — these marks appear as fine, directional lines radiating from design features. This specimen is recorded at Stage C with both obverse and reverse in mid-die state (MDS). Due to the condition of the coin on which this die was identified, verifiable die markers could not be established — an honest notation that reflects the practical limits of attribution when working from heavily circulated or damaged specimens. The absence of confirmed markers means attribution relies primarily on the trail die characteristics themselves rather than supplementary diagnostics. Trail die varieties occupy a specialized niche in error collecting, requiring magnification and favorable lighting to detect the faint hubbing drag lines. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from Denver's 1985 production of approximately 5.65 billion cents.
