Description

The sole cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1985 Denver cent, WDDR-001 exhibits a spread towards the center on ERICA of AMERICA, the right base of the Lincoln Memorial, the last Memorial column, and designer Frank Gasparro's FG initials. Crawford independently cataloged this die as CDDR-001, providing cross-reference confirmation. Obverse die markers aid attribution: a die scratch runs northeast from the upper left of the Y in LIBERTY, a die gouge dot sits above the second T in TRUST, and another gouge appears to the right of the D mint mark's base. No distinctive reverse die markers have been noted beyond the doubling itself. The affected design elements — particularly the AMERICA lettering and the Memorial's architectural details — make this variety identifiable under moderate magnification. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from a mintage of approximately 5.65 billion cents, WDDR-001 represents one of the more accessible doubled die reverses in the Lincoln Memorial series for the Wexler Team catalog (1985-D 1¢ WDDR-001).
