Description

Discovered by Mathew Sallee, this trail die obverse on a 1984 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime documents the faint secondary design transfer that occurs when a die contacts another surface — such as a feeder mechanism or adjacent die — leaving ghost-like impressions offset from the primary strike. Trail die varieties are distinct from doubled dies in that the secondary image originates from physical contact rather than hub misalignment during die manufacture. The documented die state is Stage B, with the obverse in mid-die state showing small die chips along the base of Roosevelt's bust and a small die chip on the right side of the 9 in the date. The reverse is also in mid-die state with no significant markers noted. Cataloged in the Trail Dies reference system, the 1984-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in clad composition — copper-nickel layers bonded over a pure copper core — the standard metallurgy for Roosevelt Dimes since 1965.
