1984-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Exhibiting strong hub doubling across the obverse legends and date, 1984-D DDO-001 is the first cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent. Doubled dies occur when a working die receives two or more impressions from the hub during die-making, with slight misalignment transferring a secondary image into the die face that appears on every coin struck. On DDO-001, collectors will find strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date, with near total separation on the tail of the 9 and the U of TRUST — two areas where the doubling is most dramatically expressed. Near total separation indicates that the secondary image has shifted far enough that the doubled elements appear almost as distinct, independent letters rather than merely thickened ones. Die markers UVC-2385 and DMR-002 provide additional diagnostics for confirming the specific die. Denver struck approximately 5.57 billion cents in 1984 on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams, and despite this volume, examples surface regularly enough to reward patient cherrypickers.
