CU-1C-1984D-01 Cud

Description

The first cataloged cud variety for the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, CU-1C-1984D-01 documents a marginal die break that produced a raised, featureless mass of metal along the rim of struck coins. Cuds form when a fragment of the die rim fractures and separates from the die body, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking. The resulting raised area carries no design detail — a smooth, blob-like protrusion at the coin's edge, often partially obliterating nearby legends. The size, shape, and position of a cud depend on the geometry of the fragment that broke away, and no two cuds are identical. CU-1C-1984D-01, as the first numbered cud for this date, may represent either the earliest discovered or the most prominent example from the 1984-D die population. Cuds on Lincoln cents are collected both as individual varieties and as part of broader cud-by-date sets. Denver's 1984 production of approximately 5.57 billion cents on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams consumed thousands of dies, many of which developed rim breaks during service.
