Description

Visible as a D over D with horizontal and northeast displacement, this 1983-D Roosevelt Dime repunched mintmark preserves evidence of the mintmark punch being applied more than once to the working die at slightly different positions. Before 1990, mintmarks on United States coins were hand-punched into individual working dies, and if the punch was not positioned precisely on the first strike, a correction created overlapping impressions that left traces of the original placement. The horizontal and northeast spread on this variety means the first D impression sits slightly to the left and below the final position, producing a visible secondary image that collectors can detect under magnification.
