1983-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description
First Wexler-documented repunched mint mark for the 1983-D Roosevelt dime, WRPM-001 displays a D/D North repunching where the initial placement of the D mint mark is visible as a secondary image displaced to the north (upward) of the final position. This variety is extensively cross-referenced across multiple attribution systems: CONECA RPM #1, Cherrypickers' Guide FS-10-1983D-501, and Wexler designation 1983-D 10c WRPM-001, confirming its significance as the premier repunched mint mark for this date. Repunched mint marks occur when the mint mark punch — in this case, the D for Denver — is applied to the working die with an initial misalignment, then corrected and punched again at the intended position. The first impression leaves a partial shadow image that remains visible on every coin struck from that die, creating a doubled appearance of the mint mark with the original position readable beneath or beside the final placement. For WRPM-001, the initial D was positioned lower (south) than intended, so when corrected northward to its final position, the residual first impression appears below the primary D, described as "D/D North" because the final position moved north relative to the first strike. The die also carries distinctive supplementary markers: two heavy die scratches in front of Lincoln's eye on the obverse, and a die scratch running southwest from the P of PLURIBUS — diagnostics that allow confirmation of the specific working die independent of the mint mark repunching itself. Denver struck approximately 730.1 million Roosevelt dimes in 1983, and the FS-501 Cherrypickers' listing elevates this variety to premium collectible status, as Fivaz-Stanton listed varieties command market recognition and pricing above unlisted counterparts. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt obverse and reverse design, in production since 1946, places the D mint mark on the reverse near the base of the torch, where repunching becomes visible under 10-15x magnification as a secondary D image displaced below the primary impression.
