1983-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Cross-referenced to Crawford CDDO-002, the 1983-D Lincoln Memorial cent WDDO-003 is attributed by the Wexler Team as the third documented doubled die obverse in their 1983-D catalog sequence. The Crawford CDDO-002 designation provides an independent attribution anchor, connecting this variety to Billy G. Crawford's parallel doubled die documentation system and confirming that multiple expert attributors have examined and verified the hub doubling on this die. Doubled die obverse varieties are created during the die-making process when the working hub impresses into the working die at slightly different angles or positions across multiple impressions, transferring a secondary design image that becomes permanently embedded in the die and reproduced on every coin struck from it. As WDDO-003, this variety ranks third in the Wexler Team's discovery sequence for 1983-D doubled dies, following the Class V clockwise-spread WDDO-001 and the bold doubled-ear WDDO-002. Each WDDO variety represents a distinct die that received a flawed hub impression, and the three documented varieties confirm that hub alignment issues affected multiple dies during the 1983-D production run at the Denver Mint. Struck on the copper-plated zinc planchet standard for post-1982 Lincoln cents. Attribution by Wexler Team.
