Description
Documenting a rare Type I counter clash on the 1982 Philadelphia Small Date bronze cent, CCLTI-1c-1982(SD-CU)-02 records a die pair that experienced two distinct clash events offset from each other. In a counter clash, the dies first clash without a planchet between them, transferring design elements from one die to the other. When a second clash event occurs at a different position, the previously transferred impression is driven back onto its die of origin — creating the paradox of a same-design element appearing as a raised impression on the side where it already exists as part of the normal design. In this specimen, the counter-clashed element is a portion of Lincoln's collar that was transferred back to the obverse during the second clash event. The overlays published by MadDieClashes show the precise angular positions of both clash events, illustrating how the offset between them generated the counter-clash transfer. This coin is in the collection of Joe Koelling. The Small Date bronze (copper) designation places it among the scarcer 1982 Philadelphia subtypes, struck from the 95% copper alloy (3.1 grams) before the mid-year transition to copper-plated zinc.
