1989 Type I Counter Clash CCLTI-1C-1989-01

Description

Documenting a doubled die clash event, the 1989 Counter Clash CCLTI-1C-1989-01 records two distinct clash impressions on the same die — a first clash that transferred design elements from the opposing die, followed by a second clash that transferred additional marks, including impressions of the first clash marks themselves. In Memorial bays 3 and 4, both the first and second clash events are visible, with the column 4 design having been transferred back from the first clash as a counter-impression during the second clash sequence. Counter clashes are among the most complex die clash types because they involve multiple layers of transferred design: the original design, the first clash impression, and then the counter-impression created when the first clash marks are themselves clashed back onto the originating die. This die was identified simultaneously by Jason Dick and Jeremy Gardner, with the coin courtesy of Jeremy Gardner. The dual-discoverer attribution reflects the collaborative nature of die clash research, where multiple specialists may independently identify the same die from different specimens. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. In bays 3 & 4 arrows (1.) point to the first clash event and appear to be the back of Lincoln’s coat and neck; arrows (2.) show the second clash event; the teal arrow shows part of the design (column 4) being transferred back to the reverse die from the first clash event on obverse die.
