1982 Type I Counter Clash CCLTI-1C-1982-01-LD
Error
Description
Cataloged as the first Type I counter clash for the 1982 Large Date Lincoln cent, CCLTI-1c-1982(LD)-01 features both a doubled die clash and a counter clash on the reverse — a combination that reveals a particularly eventful production history for this die pair. On the reverse, the counter-clashed impression of the Memorial roof appears where it was driven back during the second clash event, while on the obverse, the first clashed impression of the Memorial roof is visible between the number 1 and Lincoln's coat. Additional clash details include the Memorial bays impressed into the obverse fields adjacent to Lincoln, along with a nicely doubled impression of the letters TY from LIBERTY visible in bays 1 and 2 of the Memorial. This clash variety was discovered by Shannon Causey. The Zinc Large Date designation places this coin within the post-transition production stream at Philadelphia, struck from the copper-plated zinc composition (2.5 grams) introduced mid-1982. Counter clashes are significantly scarcer than standard die clashes because they require two separate clash events at different angular positions — a circumstance that compounds the already uncommon occurrence of dies contacting each other without an intervening planchet.
