Description

Fourth in the 1982 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1982-04 returns to the Zinc Large Date subtype — the same configuration as the census-opening entry 01. Multiple cuds appearing on the same subtype is expected, as each subtype was produced from its own inventory of working dies, and the Zinc Large Date was likely among the most heavily produced 1982-P variants given that zinc planchets dominated the second half of the year's production run. The cud itself records a terminal die rim failure at a position geometrically distinct from entry 01, confirmed through the standard positional comparison that prevents duplicate census entries. No secondary cross-reference numbers have been assigned. The 1982 Zinc Large Date cent, struck from copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams, represents the new era of Lincoln cent production that began mid-year and continues to the present day. Each cud from this transitional year carries historical weight as a record of the physical challenges faced by dies and presses adapting to the significantly different striking characteristics of the lighter zinc planchets.
