Description

Seventh in the 1982 Philadelphia cud census and assigned to the Bronze Small Date subtype, CU-1C-1982-07 documents a die rim failure on one of the scarcer 1982-P configurations. The bronze (copper) Small Date combination represents a narrow production window — these coins were struck before the mid-year composition change using the small date punch style, and the total output of this specific subtype was necessarily limited by the timing of the transition. Die rim failures on Bronze Small Date dies are therefore of particular numismatic interest because the survivor population from fewer working dies is inherently smaller. CU-1C-1982-07 was confirmed as distinct from the six preceding census entries through geometric comparison of break position and angular extent. No secondary cross-references have been assigned. At 95% copper and 3.1 grams, this is a pre-transition cent whose heavier weight immediately distinguishes it from the 2.5-gram zinc cents that would dominate production through the remainder of 1982 and beyond.
