Description

Twenty-third in the overall census and the first Bronze Small Date entry in this batch, CU-1C-1982-23 documents a cud on the scarcest of the four 1982 Philadelphia subtypes. The Bronze Small Date cent combines the pre-transition 95% copper alloy (3.1 grams) with the compact small date punch — a pairing whose production window was inherently narrow, bounded on one side by the introduction of the small date punch and on the other by the changeover to zinc planchets. This limited window means fewer Bronze Small Date dies were placed into service, which in turn reduces the total population of potential cud-bearing coins. Despite this relative scarcity, the Cuds on Coins census has documented multiple rim failures on this subtype, demonstrating that die fatigue is a universal phenomenon regardless of production volume. The bronze composition gives these coins their characteristic warm copper color and heavier weight, while the small date numerals — more tightly spaced than the large date — require magnification for confident attribution.
