Description

Fifth documented reverse cud for the 1982 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, CU-25c-1982P-05R reflects a significant concentration of reverse die rim failures for this date. Five cuds from a single year and mint indicates that numerous reverse dies fractured at the rim during the 1982-P production run, consistent with the high die consumption rates required to produce hundreds of millions of quarters for circulation. Each cud forms when a die rim fragment breaks away and the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking, producing a raised featureless mass at the coin's rim. The 1982-P Washington Quarter was struck in the copper-nickel clad composition adopted in 1965, fifty years into John Flanagan's heraldic eagle reverse design that would continue until the Statehood Quarter program began in 1999.
