Description

First documented full cud for the 1982 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, this variety shows the dramatic result of a complete die rim failure where a piece of the die broke away entirely, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during striking to create a raised, featureless blob at the edge of the coin. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the CU-25c-1982P-01 designation identifies this as a full cud (CU) on a quarter (25c) from the 1982 Philadelphia Mint production. Full cuds represent the terminal stage of the die failure progression that begins with pre-cuds (hairline rim cracks) and retained cuds (cracked but attached fragments) — when the fractured piece finally separates and falls away, every subsequent strike produces a coin with the characteristic featureless raised area where the die material is missing. The 1982 Washington Quarter was struck during a significant transitional year for U.S. coinage: it was the year the cent's composition changed from bronze to copper-plated zinc, and the Mint was managing production across multiple composition changes. Washington Quarters at this point featured John Flanagan's original 1932 design, still seventeen years away from the State Quarter program that would begin in 1999.
