1982 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team as 1982-P 25-cent WDDR-001, this Washington Quarter shows a very close spread towards the center on DOLLAR and the RICA portion of AMERICA on John Flanagan's reverse. The inward displacement means the secondary hub impression shifted toward the die center — DOLLAR receives full involvement while only the terminal RICA of AMERICA crosses the detection threshold, mapping the boundary where the inward shift becomes perceptible. The "very close" qualifier indicates near-overlapping impressions, producing broadened letter strokes rather than separated doubled images. The 1982-P was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition. No cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The selective involvement of RICA suggests the displacement gradient reached detectable levels only at the portion of the inscription nearest the die center, while the preceding AME letters received insufficient offset. Target DOLLAR under 10x magnification first as the more fully involved element, then scan RICA for confirming broadened strokes.
